What is Amortization?

DEFINITION

Amortization is the process of repaying a loan through scheduled payments that cover both interest and principal over the loan term.

Early payments on an amortizing loan go mostly toward interest; later payments go mostly toward principal. An amortization schedule shows the breakdown of every payment.
